The Value in that HDTV

in: TV

Read about the value of having an HDTV set considering that amount of HDTV
programming available in comparison to standard signal programming. What is your
opinion? Leave a comment.

Some Hdtv Technologies are Better Than Others at Displaying Sdtv

Despite the growing popularity of HDTV and the rising sales of HDTV sets,
most of the TV content that’s watched on HDTV sets is in standard definition
television- the older format that’s been around since the dawn of broadcast TV
more than half a century ago. There are two major reasons for this. The most
obvious reason is that there are still far more standard def channels than there
are HDTV channels. In other words, not everything that every HDTV owner wants to
watch has made the transition to HD.

The second reason why most of the TV programming that’s watched on HDTV
sets is still standard def is because HDTV programming isn’t nearly as popular
as HDTV sets. The evidence for this
includes the fact that there are only about half as many households with
subscriptions to HDTV programming packages as there are households with HDTV
sets. There are several reasons for this. For one thing, HDTV has become
something of a status symbol and the HDTV sets are much more evident of this
status than having the HDTV programming to watch on them is. Another reason is
that HDTV sets have the wide screen aspect ratio that many DVD’s and an
increasingly large number of standard definition TV shows are available in. The
wider viewing area is a good way to heighten enjoyment of watching TV, and in
many ways is more noticeable than the high resolution picture that you get with
HDTV. Yet another reason is that modern video game systems like the Xbox 360 and
Sony’s Play Station 3 can display their graphics in high def resolutions and
take advantage of the 16:9 aspect ratio of HDTV sets.

Despite all of this, many people find standard definition programming
relatively unsatisfying on HDTV sets. There are several reasons for this. For
one thing, the analog format that a lot of standard definition TV still comes
in, isn’t completely compatible with a lot of HDTV sets. This causes a worse
picture in many ways than if the same programming was just displayed on a
standard def screen. Another problem comes from the fact that HDTV screens are
simply designed to display more pixels which result in a more detailed picture
than you can get from a standard definition TV set or standard def programming.
Therefore, the result of displaying standard def programming on such a high def
screen is missing pixels which cause the picture to look grainy and generally
low quality. This is especially obvious when standard def programming is
displayed on a relatively large high def screen.

There is a way to combat this problem though- buy an HDTV set that’s good
at rendering standard def programming. There are a variety of sets that are
better than average at doing this and they’re made in a variety of technologies.
DLP projection TV’s and Plasma screen TV’s can both be good at this, but there
are more LCD screen HDTV sets on the market that are well rated for displaying
standard def programming than any other type on the market. One thing that will
help is getting an HDTV set with a built in up converter that will fill in the
absent pixels to make the SD picture look sharper. Barring that, a smaller
screen will look better because the gaps in the picture will be harder to
see.
In all, this is a problem, but not one that can’t be avoided with a
little bit of foresight.

Digital TV Technology Has Merits and Drawbacks

in: TV

Digital TV has a lot of
benefits. So many in fact that TV broadcasters, the consumer electronics
industry, and the Federal government have allied to make digital TV the sole
mode of over the air TV transmission in the United States starting on February
19, 2009. Of course who benefits most from this conversion remains to be
seen.
Excluding all of the potential economic and political benefits and
pitfalls, digital TV has a number of benefits when compared to the older analog
format that’s primarily in use right now. Digital TV uses computer equipment to
convert the images and sounds of TV into digital data (a bunch of ones and
zeros) before transmitting them to their viewers. Once the digital TV signals arrive at
their destination, other computer equipment cleans interference out of the
signal and reconstructs all of that computer data into the TV programming that
the viewer can watch on his or her TV screen. The fact that the interference can
be cleaned out means that the picture can be much clearer than it would ever be
from an analog signal. Digital TV also allows for the use of an on screen
program guide- even with over the air programming- and other similar features.
The fact that digital TV can also be subjected to video compression technology
means that it can take up a lot less bandwidth than analog TV and that leaves
more frequencies available to be used for other kinds of transmissions.
Of
course, like anything else digital TV has some drawbacks when compared to analog
TV. The biggest disadvantage is that analog TV can provide a more cohesive
signal over a greater distance than an equivalent digital signal. In other
words, as you get farther away from the transmission source of an analog TV
signal, the picture and sound get fuzzier but are still understandable. As you
get farther away from the source of a digital signal the transmission still
fades, but you won’t notice any degradation of the picture quality until it
suddenly becomes to weak and disappears all together. This means that many
people who put up with fuzzy over the air analog TV probably won’t be able to
receive a digital signal broadcast from the same location and at the same
strength. This alone might make those big rooftop antennas of the mid-twentieth
century much more popular again.
Another major problem with digital TV is
that a digital TV tuner is needed to watch it and this hardware isn’t built into
older TV sets (or a lot of newer
ones either, for that matter!). This means that in order to watch over the air
TV after February 19, 2009, anyone with an analog only TV set either has to buy
a new TV set or get a special set top box that contains a digital tuner and can
convert the digital signal into an analog signal that the TV set can
understand.
And that’s where the political and economic advantages and
disadvantages come into play! TV electronics manufacturers stand to make a lot
of money because of this conversion- all the more so because they continued to
sell analog only TV set even after they knew the conversion was
imminent.
Ultimately the American people will benefit from the conversion to
digital TV, but in the mean time some special interests will definitely come
into play as a lot of TV viewers will probably be understandably frustrated and
confused.

The Future of TV Viewing: 2008 Predictions

in: TV

British TV viewers are increasingly abandoning the traditional ‘tube’, or in many cases their flat screens, in order to watch their favourite shows where and when they want. As technology keeps up with the pace of the people, what else is in store for TV entertainment in 2008?

According to a recent survey conducted by independent research specialist, Tickbox, more British TV viewers are not tuning in to watch TV during their regularly scheduled time and are increasingly choosing to watch their favourite shows "on demand". On demand is a service which allows users to watch TV shows and films at the click of the remote control. This new service is allowing people to abandon previous TV watching schedules and watch programs at a time more suited to them.

According to the research more than a third of British TV watchers are now regularly using their on demand services which is nearly twice as many as just last year.

When asked why users are choosing to use their on demand services almost two thirds reported feeling that traditional TV watching by rigid schedules restricted their viewing. Those surveyed also used on demand to watch programs they missed, to overcome schedule clashes and to make their TV viewing more flexible.

Another big player on the TV scene, and predicted to make further advancements, are the web TV services that were launched this past year. These services allow users to watch on-demand TV on their computer; but although users still prefer TV Entertainment via their TV screen than on their smaller PC screens, the use of these on demand players online can not be denied and future growth is predicted.

The growing popularity of social networking websites like Facebook, Bebo and MySpace are furthering the growth of TV viewing over the internet. Users can use these sites to send their friends clips of the choicest moments of TV and videos from sites like YouTube. The rise of social media sites which allow for sharing videos only serves to further increase the amount of time people essentially "watch" their computer.

An area that has been so far uncharted territory in British programming is mobile and wireless TV. TV on mobiles has long been discussed and some say is still a long way from becoming main-stream, although mobile network ‘3′ has already begun limited TV broadcasting across their coverage. This could be a technical area that becomes a reality in the coming year. Although studies have shown that people currently have little or no interest in tuning in on their phones, as handsets become more advanced this may soon be history.

As people take more advantage of TV flexibility many question the life expectancy of traditionally scheduled TV. Although the end of regularly scheduled programs will not be seen in 2008, it is a possibility in the future when all TV will be on demand; either through the TV set, on the PC, on mobiles and other devices.
