A One Hour Awards Show Would Be Golden

I was reading today how the Emmy Awards show was on TV last nite and my first thought honestly was they still broadcast this show on prime-time TV? Apparently after seeing the preliminary ratings for the broadcast I am not the only person who was thinking this as they are predicting the lowest ratings for this awards show since 1990, about 12 million people. Even that number seems like way too many people, perhaps there was nothing else good on TV.

Seriously though do any of these awards shows need to be broadcast to live TV at this point? I think it’s great that all the entertainment people can get together and throw a big party for themselves, they truly are a spectacle to see. The problem I think is that we are so overloaded with entertainment and news about entertainment that a 3 hour show of all these people patting themselves on the back gets pretty boring. Think about it we watch their shows then we watch more shows about them making their shows and read news stories, watch youtube videos about their shows, enough is enough already.

Now TV has become such a watered down version of what it used to be it holds no real value anymore. The very idea and concept of actually getting on TV used to mean you had some sort of talent as an actor. Now with the advent of reality TV every Dick and Jane that wants to can make a grab for their 15 minutes of fame on TV. It used to mean that if you were on TV that you were going to see someone that actually worked to get there and would be able to entertain you for a while. Now we turn in to late nite TV mostly to see what kind of car accident we can see along side the road. That’s pretty much how I account for the popularity of reality TV at this point, you know you should just keep on driving but you just have to slow down and watch what’s going on not able to look away. Don’t get me wrong there are some quality reality shows on TV unfortunately some of the really good ones don’t get watched all that much. A good example would be the Amazing Race which just won it’s 6th Emmy in a row but is no longer on prime time TV and has been shuffled off to the Travel Channel???? WTF???

Anyway back to the original thought of this post do they really need to be broadcasting these award shows anymore? What do you think of a 1 hour highlight show instead? Show us the big awards and be done with the broadcast and move on. Please share your opinions about broadcasting award shows and thanks for reading.
